Every spring Dublin hosts the Memorial Tournament at, and the city buzzes with golf excitement. This fall Dublin is going for another eighteen holes. Next week (Oct. 3 – 6, 2013) the prestigious Presidents Cup comes to Muirfield Village.

A Short History of the Presidents Cup

The Presidents Cup began in 1994 as a biennial event during non-Ryder Cup years as an international match-play competition. During the Presidents Cup a team of international golfers has the opportunity to play against the United States team. Currently, the United States is the defending champion, while leading the series 7-1-1.

The teams do not play for prize money. Instead, the PGA Tour makes donations to charity that total more than $27 million over the past 10 years.

Team captains for the international team and the U.S. team are some of the best golfers of the PGA tour. Dublin’s own Jack Nicklaus has served twice as captain for the U.S. team, as has Tiger Woods in previous years. This year, Fred Couples will serve as the U.S. captain while Nick Price will be the captain for the international team.

The Presidents Cup has been played all over the world: everywhere from Australia to South Africa. The next one will be in South Korea in 2015.

Only two other golf clubs hosted the Presidents Cup in the US. It never was anywhere in the Midwest. It is truly special for Dublin to have the honor of hosting this exciting competition.
