Last week I attended a real estate seminar in Chicago. It was the perfect opportunity to visit two of our sons. As millennials they know the best new restaurants and cocktail bars.

Our first breakfast – fresh bread, butter & sardines! When it comes to creative dining Chicago is definitely ahead of Columbus … LOL.

Bike Trails in Chicago vs. Columbus

I try to stay in shape when I travel. So, we went jogging every morning on the “606” – the Bloomington Trail.

The 606 is Chicago’s primary urban trail. It runs East / West on a converted old railroad line. Needless to say, it’s very popular for runners and bikers. With the exception of the lake shore there’s no other trail in Chicago where you can get off the road and bike without being honked at by cars.

Unlike Chicago, Columbus is truly blessed with an excellent network of trails. Click here to see an interactive map of all Central Ohio trails and watch this promotional video …

You can also find bike trails on Google Maps. Click on the “hamburger” menu on the top left of the webpage and select “Bicycling”.

May favorite trail is the Alum Creek Trail. It starts in Galena as the Ohio to Erie Trail, runs through Westerville, Bexley and all the way down to Groveport, from where you can continue to Pickerington on the Blacklick Trail. More than 50 miles one way.

3 New Developments Along Bike Trails

If you would like to live near a bike trail, here are 3 great options for you:

  1. Heritage Trail: Pulte is building a large subdivision (Tarlton Meadows) in Hilliard on both sides of the Heritage Trail. They even built a tunnel for bikers underneath the main road connecting both sides of the development. Prices start at $269,900.
  2. Ohio to Erie Trail in Westerville: Romanelli & Hughes has 2 developments near the trail between Westerville and Galena: London Crossing has direct access, and Mirasol is not far off the trail. Prices start at $600,000.
  3. Glacier Ridge Metro Park: Trails connect many new developments to Glacier Ridge Metro Park. Autumn Rose Woods is located near the south entrance of the Park, Jerome Village is to the North featuring a variety of builders and home styles. You may also find vacant lots at Tartan Ridge and Corazon to the East of the Park.

Some Columbus suburbs, like Dublin, have an extensive network of local trails. You can reach all major trails or Metro Parks from most subdivisions. Other parts of Columbus don’t even have sidewalks. So, you need to travel on regular roads to get to the trails.
